Groups runs - are they for you?

I've been organising group runs for over 5 years, and let me tell you, I still get excited when a new runner joins us for the first time! Running in a group can have some amazing benefits, but I know that breaking down the barriers to joining can be tricky, especially for newbies.

Group runs are an excellent way to meet new running friends and explore different places to run. Plus, it's always more fun to have other people you know from your run group participating in events. I've met some of my favourite humans from participating in group runs and have had some really important conversations while sharing the trails too. And having a run planned can also help with motivation, making it easier to get out the door and meet up with running friends.

I totally get that attending a group run can be intimidating, especially if you're going alone. The biggest reason I hear from runners for not joining group runs is they're worried about their pace. But let me tell you, pace just isn't that important unless you're off to the Olympics! And if you find the right running group, it shouldn't matter at all. So, here are my top tips for finding a running group to suit your running journey:

  1. Ask friends or other runners if they know of any groups that run where you could join.

  2. Check for local run clubs in your area.

  3. Get in contact with run groups before you attend and check to see what the pace and distance expectation is for the runs. Also find out if they have a designated tail end so no one gets left behind.

  4. Take a buddy with you, it's always way more fun with a friend and it gives you some support if you find the group is not quite for you.

  5. Chat to the other runners and introduce yourself, most runners at group events love to talk and you might even find people to run with outside of the group runs too.

  6. Let go of your pace fear, most run groups will be delighted to have another buddy in their crew and if they aren't then find another crew!

Group runs aren't for everyone, but they can be a really great experience and something most runners will enjoy. It's worth giving a few a go to find out if they're right for you. And who knows, you might just find your new favourite running buddy, meet some Zeenya Clothing friends or discover a new favourite trail! So don't let pace hold you back, and give group runs a try.
